So excited to make this a reality! The wonderful owners of Strong Rope Brewery have graciously allowed us to move forward with our idea for a book pop up in the back room of their red hook location. We took measurements and this week we're looking for crates, used shelving, etc to delineate the space.
a few things I'm excited about:
- books in red hook! our public library is closed until 2025 and Mayor Adams cut Sundays from all except one of the libraries in NYC anyway. Major fuck you.
- implementing an honor system for payment, we don't plan to be there every day, but the books will be.
- partnering with red hook mutual aid to get books into the hands of our migrants and kids in the neighborhood
- sourcing other things we can sell like our friends artwork/prints, maybe i can make some cards and bookmarks as well.
things I am nervous about:
- accepting it's an experiment and things will go wrong, but what matters is we're trying and learning.
- figuring out how to parse donations and what to do with books we can't use
- becoming accountable to my community
