about

books with ❤️ from red hook, brooklyn

backroom books is Red Hook's first used and new-ish tiny bookstore, serving community and visitors alike. we are located in the back of the lovely and spacious Strong Rope brewery, overlooking the historic buttermilk channel. the shop is run by two locals: you can catch Gordon pouring brews behind the bar and Shasha replenishing the bookshelves every week. though our stock is small, all our profits go back into the community and towards the dream of one day expanding into a full store for the neighborhood.

we use the honor system, because we believe in the honesty and good faith of people. all of our books are half off the original sell price and even less according to the degree of wear. their conditions range from brand new to well-loved, and thanks to our connection with The Poetry Project, we have an extensive poetry collection for $8 and under.

In the winter of 2023, we felt there was a need for an affordable source of books in the neighborhood, since Red Hook's public library has been closed for a few years and the nearest bookstore is Freebird on the Columbia Waterfront. we were also galvanized by the fact that Mayor Adams was planning to cut Sunday service, and then did, from all NYC public libraries except one (Sunday service has since been restored!). We were up and running by the end of February 2024.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Strong Rope Brewery, we're are harbored in the backroom of their spacious location at 185 Van Dyke St. There's a lot of comfy seating to read and a stunning waterfront view so come visit and enjoy a beer while browsing our books!
